Don't have an answer to your question, just noticed that a bunch of people have read your post without posting a reply, kind of thought you might be getting lonely out there. Hell hath no fury like a Wolf scorned. C'mon people, somebody must have some constructive input (just not me) for the man.

lol - i was starting to become teary eyed with the thought of no one caring about poor little ol' me ;) now i feel warm and fuzzy again

i did find some info after further researching. CompUSA has a seven port hub that looks pretty good and has gotten very good reviews for only $30. Can't hurt to try it. even has a wall mount to put on the side of the computer desk for easy access and you can hot switch so no rebooting. Ive run out of ports and it is a bitch to change em out the way my pc is sitting (and it is dark and scary under my desk). need it for the new dvd burner.

Hey Dire, what is a USB splitter? I teach networking but aren't sure what you're talking about. Do you mean a USB Hub?

What is it you are trying to do?

oh sorry - i put the Hub terminology into the post itself but mistakenly put splitter onto the subject heading - my error! i am not techno-proficient at all and was originally thinking along the lines of cable in my brain. me dumb.

do they work well??

I have a hub by Dynex(at least I think that's what it's called) that I got from Best Buy. It has 7 ports. I have 5 hard drives hooked up to it and haven't had any problems (knock on wood). Haven't noticed any slower speeds when moving files from one to the other. I picked it up on sale for $19.99. Don't know what it normally runs.

My bad for not putting it together.

I use one at home because I have an external drive, USB mouse, camera, and at least two USB Drives. It works great. Of course make sure it is USB 2.0

You can get a $50 one like this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7642081&st=USB+Hubs&type=product&id=1134698319526

Or a cheaper one like this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7656654&st=USB+Hubs&type=product&id=1134701146763

I like 'em cuz they keep the clutter away from my laptop.

What did you want to use it for?

it would have helped if I had been more specific and used the correct terminology!!

i didn't see that one when i checked best buys web page. i either missed it, or it just didn't show up on the particular search. i found this one at compUSA, but don't know if it is any good or not. I would certainly rather spend the extra $25 if you have had great luck with the dynex. I'll take your recommendation way more than skimping on such chump change my friend.

i only have 3 (or 4, tough to see back there sometimes) usb ports on the back of my pc). i have the wireless mouse/keyboard combo, camera (not hooked up), 2 LaCie external HD's (up and running), printer (running), dvd burner (not up), etc - so i am woefully out of usb space and need a hub. If yours works great - that is the one i need. thanks man - anything other comments you can add i would most graciously accept :)
